Frequently Asked Questions
Purchasing a grave, family plot, crypt or niche
Q: How may I purchase an individual grave, family plot, crypt or niche?
A: Please write, call or visit us. Convenient terms are available.
Q: What should I consider when choosing an interment location/method?
A: In selecting a location that honors your faith, values and legacy, you should consider how many graves, crypts or niches you will need for yourself and/or loved ones. Additionally, you should consider who will be the owner(s) of the grave, lot, crypt or niche.
Process following the passing of a loved one
Q: I have lost a loved one. What do I do now?
A: Please contact your local funeral home to begin funeral preparations, or visit Mount Hope Cemetery to discuss interment options. Once an interment location has been selected and purchased with Mount Hope Cemetery, we will work with the funeral home to meet your needs.
Q: What are the costs I should consider when preparing for a traditional in-ground interment of a loved one (or myself)?
A: In addition to purchasing a grave or lot, other items to consider include the use of a vault, day of the week for the interment, what type/style of monument, supplemental care and maintenance options.
Q: What is a vault and its purpose? Is it required at Mount Hope Cemetery?
A: A vault is an outer container for the casket serving as additional protection for both the casket and the ground. While some cemeteries require it, Mount Hope Cemetery recommends but does not require the use of a vault. Your local funeral home can offer more information and help purchase a vault.
Q: What information should I know when considering the purchase of a crypt or niche?
A: For both the outdoor and indoor crypts and niches, permanent maintenance is included in the purchase price. Following the purchase, the only future charges are for the entombment(s) or inurnment(s), and the cost of the inscription(s) on the shutter. If you are considering cremation, there are regulations regarding permissible containers and urns for inurnment within the niches. We highly recommend contacting the office for further information prior to the purchase of an urn.
Q: I have my loved one’s cremated remains. How should I proceed?
A: Whether you have had your loved one’s cremated remains for a short time or years, Mount Hope Cemetery is here to assist you with inurnment. After visiting the cemetery to choose a location, we will coordinate with you (and a funeral home, when applicable), to schedule an inurnment service.
Q: What should I expect on the day of the interment service?
A: After an off-site service (should you choose), the procession will convene outside of the Mount Hope Cemetery office. At that time, following the completion of any necessary paperwork by the Mount Hope Cemetery staff and the Funeral Director, a cemetery representative will guide the procession to the interment site for the final service.
